To build an affordable home Habitat needs to buy land, hire certified trade workers and pay for building supplies. This is how Habitat helps families gain access to affordable home ownership. We build a safe and decent home and provide an interest-free mortgage that’s geared to the family’s income. It’s a hand up, not a hand out. The home isn’t free.
Families Help Build and Pay for their Own Home
Families volunteer, which includes helping build their own homes – that’s right, every family contributes at least 500 hours to help build their own Habitat home. Every Habitat home is also priced at fair market value and when families pay their mortgage, Habitat is able to reinvest that money into supporting even more families. Your donation is an investment that keeps on giving and growing in value for families on Northern Vancouver Island.
